John Yates is an industrious and gifted graphic designer who refers to himself in the third person at times. His work for Dead Kennedy’s record label Alternative Tentacles for more than a decade before flying solo seems to have helped codify his love for graphic mashups that led to his Punk Note project. Described by Yates as "A nod to Reid Miles and Francis Wolff and their amazing work at the Blue Note label, via a history of punk rock."
Punk Note is a personal journey through the ‘70s and ‘80s where a number of classic punk and new wave album covers are reimagined as Blue Note Records. A rabbit hole of inspiring design combinations, Yates’ work is a graphic tour de force worth your time to waste. Just when I was loathing the Internet for the 162nd time, his site Stealworks came to the rescue and gave me creative inspiration.
Check out all of Yates other work while you’re there as well – thanks to Roadside Chris for the heads-up.
